20. Joshua Tree National Park (California)
Once you hit California on your east-to-west cross-country road trip, you know you’re in the homestretch. But, there’s still much to see. Case in point: Joshua Tree National Park with its namesake yucca trees and its did-I-just-land-on-Mars trippy terrain.

21. The Saguaro Palm Springs (California)
You could rush your way into LA through rush hour traffic or you can spend the final day of your road trip at the Saguaro Palm Springs, lazing around the pool and snapping that perfect shot of the hotel’s rainbow-colored walls. We chose the latter.

23. Santa Monica Pier (California)
If you want to take a very literal interpretation of “from sea to shining sea,” head to the “End of the Trail” at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles. That sunset glow, viewed from the classic Southern California beach, feels like a mission accomplished.
