Train tracks at Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, San Diego

Located about 18 miles north of San Diego proper, Torrey Pines State Beach offers a long coastline of Southern California gorgeousness. You can start off at the Sunset Seat, an artistic wood perch carved into a Torrey Pine tree, which, not surprisingly, offers up a good vantage point for those SD sunsets. Walk down the path towards the beach and you will come upon a great photo spot where the road and the train tracks intersect and the beach stretches out beyond.

A stroll along Torrey Pines State Beach affords many more views worth savoring. Some stretches are peppered with quite a few rocks, so you may not get that sand-in-the-toes feeling, but it’s lovely nonetheless. This beach also didn’t seem particularly crowded (your results may vary), so it could be a choice spot for those seeking seclusion with a sweetie. And, no doubt about it, the sunsets are awesome here.

But, even if you don’t launch yourself down the runway into the sky, you can still enjoy the views of the cliffs and the endless waves while watching the gliders do their thing. Also make time to marvel at the modern architecture of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Gliderport.

The view really is quite the stunner. It seems you have to camp out before the golden hour begins to get the plum central spots under the pier, but a raised selfie stick/monopod on a walk-by can still get you a quintessential San Diego sunset snap.
